What you can do

  • Do you feel it is not safe to withdraw money? For instance, because you see suspicious activity or because the ATM looks different? Then go to another ATM.
  • Call the police when you see people behaving suspiciously at an ATM or if the ATM looks different from normal: (0900) 8844 (local rate), 24/7.
  • Never lend your debit or credit card to anyone.
  • Check at the ATM whether the card slot with anti-skimming device is identical to the picture shown on the display. If in doubt, do not use the ATM.
  • Always keep your PIN secret and never give it to anyone else. Not even to your bank. Your bank will never ask you for confidential information such as your PIN, account numbers and credit card details.
  • Make sure no one can see your PIN when entering it.
  • If your debit or credit card is swallowed by, or gets stuck in, the ATM, do not leave the ATM and do not accept any help from others. Call the bank to get your card blocked first.

  • Ignore 'helpful' people at ATMs, whether in the Netherlands or abroad.
  • Do not allow yourself to be distracted when using an ATM and always keep an eye on the card slot. Any money that has been dropped can wait until the transaction is completed.

  • Keep track of all withdrawals and payments from your account by checking your paper or online bank statements. If an ATM withdrawal or payment has been made at a location or time that you cannot remember, then immediately call your bank.
  • Immediately report the loss or theft of your debit or credit card. Look at: Numbers to Call
