Identity Fraud: What you can do

There are certain things you can do to avoid identity fraud:

  • Be careful with your IDs. Never give copies to people or parties whom you do not trust.
  • Immediately report loss or theft of an ID to the police.
  • Make sure your mailbox is secure. It should not be easy to fish letters out of your mailbox. Also ask someone to empty your mailbox when you are away from home for a longer period of time.
  • Raise the alarm if a security tool and/or code does not arrive.
  • Immediately report loss or theft of authentication tools to your bank.
  • Regularly check your personal details and transactions on all your accounts.
  • Immediately notify your bank of any irregular transactions or mistakes in your personal details.

Some common indications of identity fraud:

  • Personal information has been changed without your authorisation.
  • You can no longer withdraw money.
  • There are transactions on your bank statement that you did not make or authorise.
  • You can no longer log into online banking.
