Malware: What you can do

Malware can be installed on the computer if the user gives permission or if a user account has higher privileges. You reduce the risk of malware infections by making two user accounts: one for your personal use for installing software on your computer, and one with minimal privileges for daily use.

Malware can also be installed if there is a leak in the software on your computer. So it is important to keep your computer system up-to-date by installing all available patches as soon as these are published. Anti-virus programs, anti-spyware software and a firewall help avoid leaks being abused for malicious purposes. These programs warn you if anything strange is detected and prevent malware being installed. In addition, when banking online, always check that the security is activated, the payment details are correct and the website is legitimate. Ignore spam and suspicious emails, avoid shady websites and do not use your USB stick on any computer that you do not entirely trust.

If you notice or suspect that your computer has been infected with malware, immediately stop all online banking activity and check your account transactions from a different computer. Use a virus scanner to locate and remove the malware. Do not log into your bank again before being absolutely sure that all malware has been eliminated from your computer.
