Cash

In the Netherlands banknotes are issued by the Dutch Central Bank (De Nederlandsche Bank / DNB). Minting and circulating euro coins is the responsibility of the Dutch Ministry of Finance. The notes and coins contain various security features to easily distinguish real from counterfeit money.

Security features notes

  • Thanks to a special printing process, the banknotes have a very distinctive feel.
  • If you hold the notes up to the light, you see the watermark, the security thread and the see-through register. With authentic notes, these three features can be seen both on the front and back.
  • On the front you can see the changing illustration in the foil hologram. The foil hologram is a stripe on banknotes up to 20 euros and a square on notes of 50 euros and more. If you tilt the note, you can see an iridescent stripe light up on notes up to 20 euros. With notes of 50 euros and more you can see the colour of the ink change.
