Creditcard: What you can do

  • Place your signature on your new credit card as soon as you receive it.
  • Always keep your PIN secret and never give it to anyone else. Not even to your bank. Your bank will never ask you for confidential information such as your PIN, account numbers or credit card details.
  • Make sure your own credit card is returned to you after every transaction.
  • Do not give your card number and expiry date to others if you do not intend to buy.
  • Before signing your transaction receipt, check whether the amount and currency are correct. Keep a copy of the transaction receipt for your own records.
  • Only use webstores that respect your privacy. Do not give all your details without good reason; only give those details that are strictly necessary for the transaction.
  • Make sure the internet connection is secure before paying online. A secure internet page is indicated by two things:
    • a padlock in the browser menu bar with Internet Explorer or in the message bar in the bottom right-hand corner with Mozilla Firefox
    • the address starts with 'https' instead of 'http', where the 's' stands for 'secure'.
  • Online payments are electronic, so you do not get a copy of the transaction receipt. Instead, you must print out the payment page and/or save the digital confirmation.
  • Visit your bank’s website to see how you can use your credit card safely for online payments. Remember that these instructions only work if the webstore also uses this safer method. A list of bank websites can be found under FAQ.
  • Immediately report the loss or theft of your credit card. Go to Numbers to Call.
